Leon Rainbow Graffiti Summer School by Jersey Fresh Jam

The Jersey Fresh Jam is New Jersey’s premiere Hip Hop festival. Since 2005, the event has grown from a small, humble event into one the most respected celebrations of Hip Hop culture on the east coast. At the twilight of every summer, aerosol artists from far and wide converge to adorn the walls of Terracycle INC with their signature masterpieces, while local and regionally known emcees, bands, and DJs provide the soundtrack for the days festivities. This event is free and open to the public. Come and share the excitement!

Photographer Habiyb Shu'Aib
I met Habiyb Shu'Aib a few years ago.  Like so many people in the "Art Scene" in Trenton NJ we all know of each other.

Utilizing social media I shared an opportunity for a local Photographer to join me in the WIMG1300 Studios to capture some images of the live radio and taped TV interviews of the Trenton 365 Show.

Habiyb reached out and joined me on multiple occasions visually capturing exclusive interviews with Model/Actress/Entrepreneur Nacone Martin the Center For Interim Programs and others.

Our friendship has grown and the magic has happened; we know mutual people, we have mutual interests, we admire each others efforts, we seek each others assistance, we introduce each other to other people....we build community through civic engagement.

A few of those connections include local "watering hole" Champs, other Photographers Kevin Duddy, Chris Marinari and the Trenton Photography Club.

Recently we connected around a project he is working on for AAN-Art All Night the 24 hour art exhibit in Trenton NJ put on by Trenton NJ's Visual Arts Organization Artworks.

I suggest you reach out to Habiyb, ask him about his efforts, and check out his website www.bloved1.com

In addition you can see his first solo show happening at Mercer County Community College - JKC Gallery on the Trenton Campus beginning June 19, 2017.

Have a listen to a recent chat and see some images I captured during that visit.

Bike To Work Week 2017

This years National Bike To Work Week is May 15-19 and National Bike To Work Day is Friday May 19th.

This year I joined Jay Watson of the D&R Greenway Land Trust and several partnering organizations including Trenton Cycling Revolution and NJ Partnership for Healthy Kids to distribute cards in English and Spanish to encourage biking safety.

Have a listen to my chat with Jay captured at Trenton City Hall one of the distribution sites.

I spent most of my time at the Trenton Transit Station where I met several people who were riding.   Not everyone was wearing a helmet, some were riding on the sidewalks, most of the bikes were newer and in good condition, most didn't know about riding with the traffic and obeying traffic laws.

Bird in Hand PA

The day started with a leisurely ride through Eastern PA heading to our destination.

We stopped along the way and met some very friendly horses not in the least bit camera shy.

https://goo.gl/photos/b7epsATub3X9aLBu9

Rolling through Intercourse PA we observed the downtown area and then stopped for lunch at Hand In Hand Vol. FD.  They were having a fundraiser lunch that included all you can eat chicken pot-pie.  Where I grew up this recipe was called chicken and dumplings.  The meal was accompanied with fresh baked rolls, side veggies, fresh iced tea, lemonade and dessert.  The kind of meal that “sticks to your ribs.”

During lunch I captured images around the FD and chatted with locals “Danny” and the Fire Chief.  Religious rules prevent posing for images.  We chatted about our respective cultures.  I learned that some religious sects differ in the Amish community.  Some churches prohibit the riding of pedal powered bicycles but allow the use of scooters.  We also chatted about the challenges of finding volunteers to drive the fire trucks.

After the satisfying meal and conversation we were given a tour and saw the process of making our meal then off to Lancaster.

Have a look at some of the images captured from the first portion of the trip.

Departed Musicians on NPR

Well done National Public Radio #npr

Today's tribute to Muscians who have departed in 2016 was awesome!

Starting with #Prince's "Lets Go Crazy" those words "Dearly beloved we are gathered here today...." brought back the memories of my life in 1983-84.

The segment covered a diverse genre of music created and performed by those who have moved on from this plain and made me realize why I love the Art of Music.

As I grow in my appreciation of Music as an Artform, I will continue to share the talent I see, hear and appreciate through my programs,
The Trenton 365 Show and ABRMS The Amans Brindled Regional Music Show as well as Lifestyle By Amans Brindled.

I hope you will join me on the journey to build a better community for everyone through civic engagement.

Happy Birthday "thanks"
Wow!  This outpouring of love is amazing!  Thank you all for the birthday wishes.  I have an amazing life filled with amazing people who guide me, support me, correct me and edify me.

All of you have and continue to help me to become a better person, I thank you and I love you.

Most of you know my story and what I’ve been up to over the past several years, if not have a look at the links.

In short I have ambitious plans to build a better community for everyone.  This is not limited to where I currently reside and I have no plans for a political position.

I firmly believe that civic engagement is critical to making this happen.  Have a look at how the NY Times defines Civic Engagement.

In closing I ask you to consider your efforts in making the world a better place.  I would love to chat (preferably over a meal) about your visions and dreams, disappointments, successes and how we can partner.

Roxey Ballet Frankenstein
When I think back to my grade school education I regret not exploring the Performing Arts more.

I remember Earl Carhart telling me to consider the stage, unfortunately my interests were elsewhere.

Fast forward to my adulthood, where I am using my access to be a cheerleader for all genres of Art.

Earlier this year I met Filmmaker Katherine Elisabeth Clark while promoting her Pop Up Anthology film viewings.

Later Katherine introduced me to the Roxey Ballet based out of Lambertville NJ.  I visited the studio for the series "BEER AND BALLET" FRANKENSTEIN sneak-peek.

The open studio event gave visitors a chance to see and hear a bit about the forthcoming performance while enjoying some light refreshments.

I hope you will attend one of the performances and here is a little motivation.

Community Conversations
Most people would agree that stress levels are high at the moment.  Whether those feelings are brought on by the season, a national election, global news or just everyday life.  Either way STRESS will KILL YOU!

I want to be clear, I am not making a case for or against guns.  However I am making a case for us to have conversations around gun violence, Law Enforcement, and the policies that govern both.

Earlier this year I was taken by emotions around the news of gun violence and made this post on my personal Facebook page.

Jacque Howard
July 8Trenton
I have questions and I know/hope others do as well.
I would like to talk with, cry with, debate with, discuss with my "social media" friends and networks about how we learn from these recent events, look into our past, acknowledge our present and design/implement our future.
My network is a group of multi-generational, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi and non-faith community members and I am thankful that you are in my life, whatever the capacity.
Get in touch if you would like to connect.

As I contemplate my version of "conversations" that will take place in a safe space dealing with hard subjects like racism, sexism, classism, violence, mental health, marijuana and other subjects, I am thankful others feel the need to have these as well and are taking actions!

Angeline Dean and Darren "Freedom" Green hosted an event at Mercer County Community College's Kerney Campus in Downtown Trenton thorough My Eternal Family where the website states:

"It is our desire to educate men, women, and children on the dominating power of who God says they are.  We believe that all individuals are created "Full."  It is therefore the vision of MEF Inc. to provide the necessary training, teachings and skills that will birth maximum potential, cultural competency, and gifting.  Through these trainings, whole individuals will produce whole families and become productive citizens. Genesis 1:26-28"

Approximately 75 people gathered at MCCC's Kerney Campus for the event billed as "Community Conversations."  Author and Educator Dr. James Braxton Peterson led the discussions which included a question and answer segment.

In addition to these efforts, Inspirational Speaker, Life Coach and Self-Help Blogger Ayana Iman will host one of her #AuthenticConvos at the Grounds For Sculpture on November 5, 2016.

More information is available on the website www.ayanaiman.com

In closing I believe it behooves us to make every effort to build a better community and this starts with conversations!

Trenton Literacy Movement at Hedgepath Williams School

There are no shortages of individuals, organizations and businesses working with the City Trenton to address literacy in NJ's Capital City.

One of my personal efforts, Library Boxes of Trenton aka #lbot is about to launch the next step in this grassroots effort.  More information can be found on the Library Boxes of Trenton Facebook Page.

The week of October 9th I met with ~6 representatives of the Trenton Literacy Movement - TLM to hear about the efforts they have been working on for approximately 4 years.  At this meeting I learned a bit of the history, some of the players, the goals and most importantly why they are committed to literacy efforts.

In short "TLM is an umbrella organization born out of the commitment of the NAACP Trenton Branch to educational equality.  TLM seeks to galvanize the greater Trenton community to partner with Trenton Public Schools in addressing Trenton's literacy crisis."  Highlighted points of the organization can be read via the image captured below of a handout from the event.

The event coordinated in partnership with Random House Publishers/Books began with a welcome and introduction by Interim Superintendent Lucia Feria.  After some brief comments Chief of Staff Francis Blanco delivered a message from the Mayor Eric Jackson followed by comments from Author Mary Pope Osborne.

Hedgepath-Williams School located in Trenton's East Ward is named after 2 families who fought segregation in Trenton's public schools in 1944, which became the precursor to the Brown v. Board of Education case that prohibited racial segregation of school systems throughout the United States.

My visit also gave me some time to chat with Principal Mrs. Talaya Stoddard-Wilson about the biking culture in Trenton, stay tuned.

Trenton NJ Youth Stat Meeting Oct 2016
Ayana Abdul-Raheem, Trenton NJ Youth Stat Coordinator invited me to this public event held at the Trenton Board of Education Main Office located at 108 North Clinton Avenue.

Like many other communities throughout the USA, Trenton has an issue with the illegal activities of the youth.  These actions are categorized as Runaways/Missing, Assaults, Weapon Offenses, Curfew Violations and others.

One could point to any number of reasons for this, some of those include a lack of services and programming due to budgetary cuts, reduction in staffing/person power, lack of financial resources in the home, mental and physical health issues, these and many more are effecting the lives of these individuals and the communities where they live.

Approximately 100 people mainly Law Enforcement, Educators and Service Program professionals were in attendance.  After a brief introduction, Ayana delivered a power point presentation describing the program, organizational structure, partners and the very alarming statistics.

Speakers included Juvenile Officers Arlene Miranda and Steve Smith, Aneisha Walker and Armstead Johnson of Mercer Street Friends, Terrence Stokes of the Trenton Board of Education and Detective Sargeant Bethesda Stokes.  In their own words through personal experiences, each expressed the importance for this to be addressed immediately and that a lack of focus would have drastic effects on the lives of so many youth, the communities in which they live and society as a whole.

As a person of faith I am often looking for spiritual references to help with my own understanding of a situation.  I think about the body and the need for it to function as a whole.  The legs without a torso are of little use likewise no oxygen means no life.  In this reference discarding any youth will prove catastrophic to the structure of society here in Trenton and if that progresses then beyond the less than 7.5 sq. mi. city limits.  Law Enforcement will tell you "spill over" has been happening in surrounding communities for many years, (going both ways might I add) therefore this is now a regional problem if not worse.

Details regarding the costs of the program were not discussed however in the past this has been an area of concern as documented in 2013.

http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2013/05/trenton_officials_trying_to_ra.html

Ayana made it clear that the efforts of the current Youth Stat Administration were operating under very specific guidelines and I encourage you to contact her for the details and to answer any questions.

In closing, I left with a strong sense that this is not a Law Enforcement problem, this is a societal problem and all members of society need to respond.  I understand that one size doesn't and will not fit all, but we as members of society need to do our individual parts to seek out how we can build a better community.

If you would like to discuss my efforts please email me: trenton365show@gmail.com

Horticulture Inquiry - Quercus acutissima
I'm a bit "country" meaning I really enjoy the outdoors and everything that comes with it.  Growing up in Ewing Township I spent most of my time outside playing in "The Hole" a location where the municipalities of Trenton and Ewing gathered soil that would be used to reinforce the banks of the Delaware River during a flood.  At least that is what I was told.

"The Hole" was bordered by a cemetery, a creek and two main arteries.  It was full of wildlife and native vegetation.  I remember eating blackberries, raspberries, crab apples and when things were good wild strawberries even though I was told they would make me sick.

"The Hole" was a meeting place and hangout location for my family, their friends and plenty of others.  In this space I learned to ride motorcycles, throw "dirt bombs" learned what bees liked sandy soil, flew kites and more.

So when the 2 trees outside of our 100+ year old row home in Trenton, New Jersey began to drop an over abundance of seeds/nuts, I perked up.

I put a few videos and some images out to my social media network to learn about these trees.  The trees are behaving as they normally do except this year they are dropping a "bumper crop" in the street, on parked cars, the sidewalk and me while cleaning them up.  Within a 24 hour period I've picked up over 80lbs. of nuts, caps, leaves and debris from the crushed droppings.

The local family of squirrels are enjoying themselves however I am also worried that someone may try to capitalize on the "Act of God" and file a slip and fall claim.  I would hate to see these trees planted by the City of Trenton removed since they provide needed shade to the street as well as shelter for the native wildlife and quite frankly I think they are beautiful!

I posted videos and images to my Facebook Friends hoping to learn a few things, mainly if this was normal and if these nuts/seeds were edible.  A few minutes later the replies poured in!  I am thankful for the ability to quickly connect with people who have similar interests and much needed knowledge.

In addition to receiving replies from people who own Tree Service Companies, work for Tree Service Companies, Master Gardeners, a few jokes and more, it has been narrowed down to Quercus acutissima.

Thank you for all of the replies, now to see if I can eat these bad boys!

Timothy J. Mellor was first to nail it.  Thanks to the Master Gardeners of Mercer County NJ as well, Mary, Debbie, Dana and Barbara.

Concert to End Gun Violence Ewing NJ

On Sunday September 25, 2016 throughout the United States simultaneous concerts took place around the subject of gun violence.

"Remember Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016
Artists and activists
will band together for the
#ConcertAcrossAmerica to
#EndGunViolence
with a series of live concerts
brought together by social media."

In Ewing Township a suburb of Trenton NJ, Event Coordinator Eric Miller partnered with Trinity United Methodist Church to host the 12-8pm event.

Eric Miller has appeared on the Trenton 365 Show in the past to promote his series of events "Candlelight Concerts for Epilepsy Awareness" of which he started after the sudden passing of his Wife Carolina in 2011.  Those shows began in the living room of his house and moved to the sanctuary of Trinity.  Eric mentioned that he and Senior Pastor Brian Joyce are BFF's and talk regularly.

Have a listen to my chat with Pastor Joyce sharing about Trinity.

Earlier in the week Eric and Regina Thompson-Jenkins of The Tre' Devon Lane Foundation were live in the WIMG1300am Studio to promote the event.  You can hear the interview in it's entirety via this link.

In addition to live music on two stages attendees were able to view an Art Exhibit coordinated by Artworks Trenton.  Artist Addison Vincent who manages installations for Artworks shared a bit about  the visual arts organization.

Carole Stiller of Million Moms March NJ shared information about this national organization and will be a guest on the Trenton 365 Show in the near future, have a listen to our chat.

Dwight Panozzo of Gays Against Guns shared a spoken word piece and chatted with me afterwards about the organization.
https://soundcloud.com/trenton365/dwight-panozzo-phd-gays

There was plenty of live music from a diverse and eclectic group of performers including traditional Indian music, a KISS tribute band Rock N Rollover, Singer Songwriters and more.

I was particularly moved by a John Richie film I viewed based upon Gun Violence in New Orleans LA, coordinated by Pop Up Anthology.  Katherine Elizabeth Clark one of the Partners was recently a guest on the Trenton 365 Show promoting a viewing of local films that took place in partnership with the Trenton Film Society at the Mill Hill Playhouse.

Here is the link to the interview with Katherine and Filmmaker Adrian Colon.

Refreshments were available for purchase from a number of food-trucks including Tim McRae's WTF-Wheres The Food Truk and others.

You can learn more about the WTF? Food Truk via this link.

Regardless of your stance on guns, the illegal use and the effects on society when a life is taken by one is devastating.

I encourage you to consider how we can communicate our concerns, our "for" and "against" in a safe and open space so that we can build a better community for everyone!

Rahway NJ

I appreciate the opportunity social media gives me to stay connected with my past.  I recently reconnected with a college classmate and took her up on a visit to Rahway NJ for a tour.

http://cityofrahway.org/

While attending AIPH-The Art Institute of Philadelphia, Angela "Angie" Pryor and I studied Fashion and lived in the International House located at 37th & Chestnut.  The "I-House" like it's name suggests put us in daily contact with people from all over the world.

My visit took place on a warm Wednesday in September and reminded me of my childhood when the weather is cool in the morning, very warm throughout the day and cool again at night.  It's amazes me how the timing of back to school and the change of season happens simultaneously.

The drive north on Rte. 1 to Rahway started with a visit to the studio of Artist Karey Maurice.  "KAMO" cut his teeth in NYC in the 80's and 90's and developed a following as a "Pop Artist" and can be found in Princeton NJ these days.

www.redbaloonstudio.com.

Arriving in Rahway I was met with a very specific marketing plan to showcase the art scene.  Pole signage, murals and more make it clear "Art" is a marketplace in Rahway.  Like many post industrial cities, Rahway is a hub with access for mass transit through a rail station, bus terminal, easy access to US Route #1 and the Garden State Parkway.  While chatting with Angela one of the many things I learned was that NJ Transit offers daily bus service from Rahway into NYC that takes ~30mins and train service to the New Jersey Shore.

http://www.njtransit.com/var/var_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=SummerJSTo

My walking tour began with a stop at the newly renovated Rahway YMCA that was having a "Health Fair" for the seasoned population.

Angie and I headed over to Bianca's Deli for lunch.  I asked a patron what he was having and he suggested I have the Tortas and I am glad I did.  Thinly sliced beef steak with lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado and a dressing similar to mayo with a vinegar taste on a toasted roll that was amazing! Crunchy crust with a light chewy center, the paper wrapper helped to hold everything together and kept the juices from running down my hand.  I'll be back for this!

After lunch we walked several easy blocks throughout the downtown area.  Fellow Community Organizer and Entrepreneur Angela Pryor showed me Rahway from a locals perspective and introduced me to several people including Business Owners, Executive Directors and others who are working to make Rahway be all it can be.

During the tour I observed the diversity in Rahways' downtown area with several businesses owned and operated by African Americans, Latino Hispanics, Asians as well as Irish and Italian immigrants.

In addition to a Transit Station, Municipal Building and Recreation site in the downtown area, Rahway also has multiple thriving Performance Art spaces as well.  One of which is open 7 days a week during "business hours" with offerings through a Cafe!

http://www.ucpac.org/

http://www.ucpac.org/hamilton-stage

The City of Rahway has an estimated population of ~30,000 and covers just over 4 sq. miles but it offers so much.  While walking around I gained the feeling of a small city where everyone knows each other and Art in various forms is celebrated.

I am sure efforts like this have many moving parts however, Angela and others who I spoke with were excited about the efforts of Mayor Samson D. Steinman.  Mayor Steinman and I did not connect on this visit but I plan to sit down with him and some Key Leaders of his team to learn of his vision and how I can help.

Thank you Angie for the invite and introduction to Rahway NJ, I look forward to returning and sharing about my experiences!

In the interim I suggest you reach out to Angela "Angie" Pryor and ask for a personal tour of Rahway, she can be found via the following information and consider catching her at the following events.

Capital City Farm Trenton NJ September 2016
It is well documented that I grew up in a village in Ewing Township NJ.  There I learned so many valuable life lessons from my parents, 6 siblings, Great Aunt, Maternal Grandparents as well as Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Nieces and extended family and friends.

One of the lessons I am so proud of is the love of nature and food.  Of course we all appreciate food and recognize it's importance to life.

I remember the garden in my Grandparents backyard.  I looked forward to getting dirty and fell in love with the feeling of the soil under my fingernails, so much so that now I consider that a form of therapy.  A vivid memory is sitting on the back steps with Lula my Grandmother eating "our" cucumbers and tomatoes and walking a few hundred yards into the "hole" with my cousins to pick blackberries that "Grandmom" would use to make "blackberry pie" completely from scratch!

So when I heard that Trenton would have a farm I was stoked!  I recall a invite to a planning meeting conducted by the D & R Greenway Land Trust where we discussed the ongoing negotiations for the purchase of the property and potential site remediations.  I was fascinated to learn of the history of the land located next to the Trenton Police Department and adjacent to TASK - Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the Rescue Mission, I was on board.

After negotiations and the subsequent finalized purchase, I met with Allegra Lovejoy who would be a key leader in the Capital City Farm, have a listen to our chat.

https://soundcloud.com/trenton365/allegra-lovejoy-dnrgreenway-land-trust

Recently I visited the Capital City Farm, made some new friends and took in the efforts of the various partners to inspire me and others.

Have a listen to my chat with Andrew Blackwell, a locally born and raised young man who is excited about what the Capital City Farm means to his city.

Going forward expect to hear more from the Capital City Farm and other agriculture projects and initiatives through Trenton 365, in the interim have a look at some recent images.

(Some of the following information was taken from the website of the Center for Child and Family Achievement)

I met Wanda W. Stansbury in 2015 when I was contacted about a Art Fundraiser that was taking place in Princeton NJ.  I am a big supporter of Original Art and several of the participating Artists are friends so it was a no brainer for me to support and cover the event.

My initial meeting with Wanda W. Stansbury who is the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Child and Family Achievement was a very pleasant one.  I met with Wanda, Fanya Gallo (Co-Chair Special Events) and Artist Tasha O'Neil in space #49 of the Princeton Shopping Center which was also the location of the fundraiser.   After viewing the artwork we chatted, have a listen.

The Center for Child and Family Achievement, believes that parents and children can learn together, and seeks to inspire and to develop stronger academic achievement in children living in poverty from Kindergarten through High School graduation, by addressing the needs of the family.

Since that initial meeting and interview our friendship has grown and included some partnering as we work to build a better community for everyone and address the achievement gap.  The Center for Child and Family Achievement has adopted a Library Box of Trenton NJ and we are working on plans to have #lbots in all of the public schools in Trenton NJ, stay tuned!

I took Wanda up on the offer to visit PJ Hill School in Trenton NJ for the ESY (End of School Year) Celebration but first I stopped by John Mennell's organization Magazine Literacy to pick up some items to share with the children and families.  www.magazineliteracy.org has partnered with Trenton 365 and others to distribute magazines, comics and periodicals.

After picking up ~300 Highlights Magazines and chatting with some workers at the Isles Mill One building, I headed to PJ Hill school.

I chatted with 2 Security Officers who helped me carry the magazines into the gym.  As I moved down the corridor I could smell fresh popcorn, something sweet and could hear the delightful sounds of children enjoying themselves.

The gym was setup with visual displays from the students, several tables with books, a refreshment station provided by a local vendor Lavalles Party Jumps and music.

I grabbed several images of the parents, children and teachers before the crowd went crazy upon the arrival of the ADC Kid mascot Prada Enchilada.  Dancing to some of the most popular dance music Prada Enchilada led the children and adults through several moves and took me back to my "Dance Party USA" and "Dancin on Air" days.  More on that at another time!

I chatted with Trenton Board of Education Superintendent Lucy Ferria and Wanda about the event and some of the expectations going forward.

Have a listen to some of the audio captured at the event.

I also want to give a shoutout to Robinson who I recalled from my days playing basketball at Moody Park and the Lawrence Neighborhood Center.
